The soft-spoken and selfless physician, Professor Dr. Kamrul Islam—who has performed 2,000 kidney transplants free of charge over the past 18 years, saving thousands of lives—has now been humiliated in his own hospital. At his established CKD Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka, a BNP leader reportedly entered, demanded extortion money, and engaged in aggressive intimidation. This is not merely an attack on a doctor; it is a slap in the face of the nation’s humanitarian values. With a success rate of over 95 percent and responsible for nearly half of the country’s kidney transplants, this distinguished individual is now being targeted using

a “political label.” Under the flimsy excuse of being a supporter of the previous government, extortion was demanded from him and chaos was unleashed inside the hospital. The public must ask: if this is the level of respect afforded to a Freedom Award–winning, exemplary physician, then where does that leave the safety of ordinary citizens? Even after so much time has passed since the incident, why has the current BNP government remained silent? Why has no strict action been taken against the identified extortionist and perpetrator? Is the government enabling criminals, or is it simply incapable of controlling them? Dr. Kamrul Islam is

a national asset. The failure to protect him reflects the extreme incompetence and shamelessness of the current administration. This dirty politics must come to an end. We demand proper respect for Dr. Kamrul Islam and exemplary punishment for those responsible for this act of terror.
